Overview

Coordinated control of voltage and reactive power through the use of capacitor banks and regulators is one way that utilities can control demand and increase system efficiency. Of course, all of this must be managed by a sophisticated system of automatic controls. These types of advanced volt/VAR projects are gaining in popularity, and many leading utilities have included volt/VAR control as part of their overall smart grid road map. This workshop will provide a practical overview of integrated volt/VAR control that includes the business case, technologies, and utility experience.

Schedule Highlights

  • Overview of integrated volt/VAR control
  • System benefits and utility value proposition for IVVC
  • The role of voltage regulators
  • Implementation practices for capacitors
  • Utility case study: From installation to implementation

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine integrated volt/VAR control (IVVC) technology and system benefits
  • Analyze factors involved with regulator and capacitor implementation
  • Examine a volt/VAR project from start to finish

Instructors' Biographies

Craig Colopy has been involved with Cooper Power Systems voltage regulators for 37 years, holding various positions in engineering and marketing. In addition, Craig has worked with IEEE Transformer and IEC–TC14 standard working groups for 17 years, including serving as chairman of the IEEE C57.15 voltage regulator standard for 17 years. Craig has made many product and technical presentations around the world and has created text covering voltage regulators for industry textbooks and conference papers. Presently as Global Technology Manager, Craig works with the executive staff developing global product and technology roadmaps and strategies.

Damian Gonzalez completed his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico and his master's degree in Electric Power Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Damian has been with Cooper Power Systems for twenty six years and manages the Capacitor Products Application Engineering group in Greenwood, South Carolina. Damian’s experience includes power system modeling and analysis, and product management for fuses, surge arresters, distribution transformers, and capacitors. He has made technical presentations around the world including overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, harmonics, power quality, and capacitor applications. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania and a senior member of IEEE.

Daniel Arden Daniel Arden holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialty in Power Systems Engineering. He has 15 years of experience designing, developing, and delivering Advanced Analysis Applications for generation, transmission, and distribution centers. Experience includes expertise in Energy Management Systems (EMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Distribution Automation (DA), Demand Response, Geographic Information System (GIS), as well as System Integration based on utility standards, including NRECA MultiSpeak, ICCP, DNP3 and Common Information Model (CIM). Daniel is a member of IEEE and is an active participant in Distribution Automation and Distribution Reliability committees and the Volt-Var Management Task Force.

Daniel Desrosiers holds a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal (1977). He worked for Hydro-Québec for more than 30 years in the T&D field. He has an extensive experience in planning, operation and engineering, covering generation, transmission and distribution. He has performed multiple network studies and supervised teams of engineers both locally and internationally. He is currently managing CYME’s Engineering Consulting Services group (part of Cooper Power Systems EAS). Daniel is also recognized internationally as an electric network expert. He chairs the IEC Canadian National Committee TC8 (Systems aspects for electrical energy supply) and TC99 (System engineering and erection of electrical power installations), and is a designated expert on IEC TC77A (Low frequency phenomena) and IEC TC99.
